Hi all.
 I was thinking of buying a new ATV to go back and forth to work on , but as I noticed that most have a 100-150 mile service period....I ride 6 miles a day
So this means a service every month to keep the 3 year guarantee...

So in 3 years I have spent 70,000 on service.....is this nuts !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What kind of atv are you planning on buying? And yes i had the same problem, and to make it even more complicated my dealer even had the service plan changed to make it even more harder to stick to the service intervals, just to make it impossible for me to claim any future problems with the vehicle. I ended up throwing the service plan out the window and do all the oil/filter changes myself. Thats atleast the most important part of the service plan, the rest will show itself while riding the bike (to work) and depending on what kind of atv your buying its usually not that hard to do. Theres alot of guides out there to aid you.

Yeah thats what I had thought to do...throw the friggen guarantee out the window..as its more expensive than the damn machine.

I have been looking at the Dinli 450, reasonable price at 54,000 new. Question is will it hold up with 50km a day back and forth to work. The whole idea was to lower the cost with fuel and road tax, but with their service plan you might as well buy a damn Ferrari

OK Svea Fordon ( Haninge) offered me a new Dinli 450 lightning ( street) for 48,000... so I'm interested. But the service issue is still on my mind.  I'm thinking with the miles I would log driving to work each day would be real expensive...so I'm doing the oil changes myself, as 12,000 a year for minor service is waaaaay to much just to keep the guarantee active.

Well its a gamble either way, and if its a "road legal" atv and you remove the engine restrictions the warranty is long gone aswell! So your better of doing all these things anyway, but then again you might get help from the dealer regardless, my dealer did say i could get "help" if something was wrong with the bike, i doubt it but you never know. But if the day comes theres always atvforum.se to aid you. And from what i can tell theres a bigger chance of resolving the issue with the help from this community than _any_ atv dealer atleast in this country. // ronny

Yeah I was wondering about the engine restrictions, what is that exactly?  and how do you remove it?  obviously you want the maximum horsepower after the break-in period is finished.

The break in is usually done within the first week, atleast it was for me, so you might aswell do it right away and just be "gentle" with the engine instead, i've never owned a dinli bike so i would know the first thing about it but someone else might point you in the right direction (your dealer should be able to help you remove them aswell for a small fee depending on what the restrictions are)
Its usually just a restriction in air intake and air output, but some manufacturers also include electric components for max rev and such, speed limiters aswell (not really common i know but ive seen 1 or 2). Im quite sure theres very detailed guides about doing it yourself aswell somewhere around this board. Its a pretty common bike model on these forums.

Yeah I get the kilometer/ mile thing.  So in my first post I was talking swedish miles....
 
I still think 100 miles ( 1000km) is way to often for service. If you think that most engines like motorcycles and cars have a much longer period, I doubt a car or motorcycle owner would ever accept 100 mile service intervals....

most production engines run a thousand miles between oil changes, So why do ATVs need such extreme service?  is it because the engine quality is less than a motorcyle or car? 

 In fact I dont know any production engine that would demand that kind of short interval service, outside of a jet aircraft...

 It has to be one of two reasons,
 1. The engine components aren't built to last.
 2. Or the dealer makes thousands off the service game.

1. I can safely say that on yamaha the engine on my raptor 700 is atleast 90% identical to the bikes yamaha produced in the early 90's and they had more "normal" service intervals, however an atv from yamaha in this size was never intended for "road legal" purposes so the service intervals are for an offroad use, i.ex more maxed out runs. So atleast for me i can pretty much copy any yamaha road legal bike and follow the service specs from there on. Or somewhere inbetween bcuz i have serious problems just cruising around :p
2. Yes and no, most of them tend to yes, or appeantly i should say. Like i said before you just have to take it on yourself to find a workable service plan for the way your using the machine. If you drive like a mad dog, you should service more often (some people even more often than the service charts if you ask me!)
But if you put regular work trips on it at a decent rev rate you could probably skip 1 or 2 intervals. Its a matter of time and effort i know but an oil change and filter swap shouldnt take more than half an hour if your efficient.

But thats yamaha im depending on, i have no clue about other brands to be honest.

En Polarismekaniker jag pratade med, och som inte har ett egenintresse av dom korta serviceintervallerna, berättade att när det gäller oljebytet till framdiffen, är det VÄLDIGT VIKTIGT att byta enligt schema. Att köra bara ett tiotal timmar över tiden kan få diffen att sluta fungera.Titta på t.e.x. en modern gräsklippare, snöslunga, där gäller ofta 40??? timmar
