Stackars fyrhjuling!

July 04, 2005 Why You Should Wear a Helmet
One week ago, this was a brand new Polaris ATV.
The rider was in the sweep position and hit a rock on the trail with one wheel. It pitched her off down a thousand foot ravine with the machine following closely.
She is fine, a matter of very good luck and an all too rare precaution--she was wearing a helmet. Her head struck some rocks very hard, but the helmet absorbed the impact. A patch of scrub oak arrested her fall.
Nothing arrested the ATV, which as the picture shows, destroyed itself in the tumble.
I would never consider riding off-road on my motorcycle without minimal equipment that includes a helmet, riding boots and a chest protector. More usually I will also have elbow, knee and hip pads on as well. Yet an ATV rider is much more likely to be pitched from the machine by an off-camber hit to one of the wheels and they treat the riding experience like a trip to the grocery store in the family mini-van.
Please use your heads...to fill helmets--and if you ask me, learn to ride a trail bike instead.
